Shoulder Screw Selection Guide: From Precision Positioning to Bearing Pivots

A shoulder screw works as two components in one: a precision-ground shoulder that behaves like a shaft, plus a threaded end that clamps the mating part. Before you select a shoulder screw for precision positioning or use it as a bearing pivot, four variables decide success: shoulder diameter tolerance, shoulder length, material hardness, and drive style. This guide reflects 30+ years of custom fastener production at Yuhuang Electronic Technology (Dongguan) Co., Ltd., a China shoulder screw manufacturer serving customers in more than 60 countries.

Precision positioning starts with the shoulder screw datum

In jigs, fixtures, stripper plates, and locating blocks, the ground shoulder is the datum of the assembly — the thread only holds it in place. For repeatable positioning, specify a precision shoulder screw with an h7 or g6 diameter tolerance and a straight, burr-free shoulder. A precision shoulder screw with tight concentricity between shoulder and thread keeps mating plates aligned through thousands of automation or press cycles. Never assume that stock items meet your datum requirements — ask your shoulder screw manufacturer for measured diameter, length, and concentricity data for every batch.

When a shoulder screw carries bearing-pivot loads

Levers, idler rollers, linkages, and hinges turn the shoulder into a plain-bearing surface, so two requirements change: hardness and finish. For rotating fits, specify a g6 tolerance with a ground, low-roughness shoulder. Hardened alloy steel (12.9 grade, HRC 28–38) resists wear and galling far better than soft stainless. In corrosive or washdown environments, choose stainless or coated versions. If vibration threatens the pivot, a nylon-patch shoulder screw adds prevailing torque without altering pivot geometry.

Shoulder screw selection checklist: six decisions

Shoulder diameter and tolerance — the functional size: h7 for location, g6 for rotating fits.
Shoulder length — the spacer height between head and thread; tolerance it, do not treat it as nominal.
Material and hardness — 12.9 alloy steel, 303/304 stainless, or brass for conductive, non-magnetic designs.
Drive style — hex socket, Phillips, slotted, or tamper-resistant heads for security duties.
Thread size and class — M0.8–M24 metric or inch equivalents, with the class from your drawing.
Finish — zinc, black oxide, or nickel matched to the service environment.

Work with a shoulder screw manufacturer that documents tolerance

Yuhuang has produced custom screws and fasteners in Dongguan since 1998 across two bases covering 20,000 m². Cold heading covers M0.8–M24 step and shoulder screws, while CNC turning holds tolerances to 0.006 mm. Optical sorting checks parts at 600 pieces per minute, under IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 systems, and our components serve brands such as Xiaomi, Huawei, and Sony. Send your 2D or 3D drawing to yhfasteners@dgmingxing.cn for a free engineering review and quote — custom shoulder screw lengths, materials, and head styles are our daily work.

FAQ

Are shoulder screw and shoulder bolt the same part? Yes. Shoulder screws are also called shoulder bolts, and stripper bolts in stamping dies. Use the term precision shoulder screw whenever tight tolerance control is specified.

Which material suits bearing pivots best? Hardened alloy steel with a ground shoulder. Stainless suits corrosion-critical pivots; brass suits low-load, non-magnetic, or conductive assemblies.

Can the shoulder length be customized? Yes. As a shoulder screw manufacturer, Yuhuang machines custom M0.8–M24 shoulder lengths, tolerances, and drive styles from your drawing, with samples available before mass production.
