Vibration is the number one enemy of threaded fasteners. From the spin cycle of a washing machine spinning past 1,000 RPM, to the hammering mechanism inside a power tool, to the high-frequency motor whine of an electric vehicle, sustained vibration slowly works ordinary screws loose. The result: rattles, loosened components, intermittent electrical faults, and warranty failures. The fix starts with the right screw-and-washer combination — and increasingly, that means a washer-assembled SEMS screw.
Loening follows a predictable chain. Cyclic loading causes microscopic slip between the thread flanks; that slip progressively consumes the fastener’s preload, the clamping force holding the joint tight; once preload decays, the joint opens under load and the screw backs out. The failure is often silent — nothing appears wrong until a component rattles loose in the field. The engineering principle is simple: retaining preload is the goal, and a fastener that holds its clamping force through vibration cycles will not loosen.
A double SEMS screw (W-type combination screw) carries two pre-assembled washers: a spring washer and a plain washer, both captive under the head. The spring washer maintains tension: as vibration tries to relax the joint, the spring keeps pushing back, preserving preload across the joint’s service life. The plain washer distributes load and protects the clamped surface. And the captive design is the real safeguard — the locking function is guaranteed on every joint, because it can never be forgotten, misplaced, or assembled in the wrong order on the line. For the most demanding applications, SEMS screws can be combined with a nylon patch on the threads, adding prevailing-torque locking that resists backing out under extreme kinetic stress.
